James Mapley-Brittle is GRRL, an artist and DJ who hails from the college town of Durham, North Carolina. There is resolutely nothing cozy or small about GRRL’s sound – they craft an exquisite world of music that explores the elements of future bass, techno, grime, gqom, breakbeat, and club without falling into traps or clichés.
With their future-forward style and finely tuned aesthetic, GRRL’s early Soundcloud salvos quickly caught the attention of some of cyberspace’s most savvy names. In 2016, GRRL was invited to do a show on NTS Radio and began curating playlists for Nest HQ, which led to DJ mixes lauded by Skrillex and gigs with Anamanaguchi, Porter Robinson, and AG Cook and the PC Music crew. From there, GRRL was enlisted to help score Alexander Wang’s Sisters movie and developed a sample pack for Splice, in tandem with frequent collaborator Nick Sanborn (of Sylvan Esso and Made of Oak), that leans into hardware sounds and the stretchy sci-fi drums that are a GRRL staple.
bomb rush cyberfunk
GRRL is one of the contributing artists on the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk soundtrack. Their tracks "Operator" and "Trinitron" are featured within the game, adding a signature burst of electronic, hyperpop-inflected energy that meshes perfectly with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk’s retro-futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic. This collaboration not only underscores the game’s homage to classic titles like Jet Set Radio but also highlights the innovative, boundary-pushing spirit of the PC Music scene. Fans have noted the track’s impact—helping elevate the game’s immersive atmosphere with its edgy, club-ready vibe.
pc music
GRRL has put out tracks on AG Cook’s music label like Instigator and Honeybee. These releases highlight their blend of glitchy electronic beats with a club-oriented aesthetic that fits well within the label’s experimental ethos.
NTS Radio
GRRL’s sound captured the attention of NTS Radio founder Femi Adeyemi, who enlisted them for one of the station’s first US-based shows – GRRL’s monthly transmission remains a snapshot of their impeccable taste in crisp percussion and bleeding-edge bass.
